Pilot Sites
CoffeeLand conducts field research in Ethiopia’s highland coffee-forest landscapes. Study sites are established in two key coffee-growing regions, selected to represent the diversity of Ethiopia’s coffee-forest systems.
Research Activities at Sites
At each site, the project team conducts:
- Establishment of permanent field monitoring plots
- Shade tree diversity and density surveys
- Soil sampling and health analysis
- Biomass and carbon stock measurements
- Collection of ground-truth data for satellite image validation
- Engagement with local farming communities
Remote Sensing & AI
In addition to field sites, the project uses multi-sensor satellite data (Sentinel, GEDI) covering a broader area of the Ethiopian coffee belt, analyzed with AI/ML models to map coffee-forest extent, structure, and carbon stocks at landscape scale.
